How to Care for WinterGem Boxwood Seedlings

How to Plant:

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.

  • Gently loosen the roots and place the seedling upright in the center.

  • Backfill with native soil, tamping gently to remove air pockets.

  • Water thoroughly after planting.

  • Add 2 inches of mulch around the base, avoiding direct contact with the stem.

Where to Plant:

  • Prefers partial sun to full sun—ideally, morning sun with some afternoon shade.

  • Thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.

  • Excellent for low hedges, borders, or foundation plantings.

  • Plant 2 to 3 feet apart for hedge spacing or closer for tighter designs.

Watering:

  • Water deeply 2–3 times per week during the first season.

  • Once established, water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

  • Avoid waterlogging—ensure proper drainage.

Maintenance:

  • Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release formula in early spring.

  • Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and promote dense growth.

  • Watch for signs of boxwood blight or leaf miners; maintain airflow between plants.

  • Refresh mulch annually and keep the root zone cool and moist in summer heat.
